Ribes rubrum 'White Pearl'
Snack on this ‘white pearl’
Creamy white and sweet. That's white currants. Fresh from your own garden. The currant 'White Pearl' (Ribus rubrum) tastes sweet and is creamy white. We grow the berries in our garden, balcony or terrace. The shrub attracts butterflies and bees. You will receive the (bare-rooted) currant in sugar cane sacking. This is more environmentally friendly than plastic nursery pots. The roots are shipped fresh from the ground. They are already one year old. This gives them additional strength, enabling them to grow faster than they would in a nursery pot. Plants grown from bare-root stock also adapt to their new environment more easily. They flower better and they are more economical. Bare-root stock plants grow when it becomes warmer. They are winter-hardy perennials. They can be planted at any time, provided that the ground is not frozen. The fruit bush blossoms in the spring. This is when it reveals its green and white flowers. A crop will be ready to harvest from summer onwards in the second year after planting. Currants require support while growing. Be sure to secure the vines to a climbing base or woven structure. Sufficient light is needed to ensure good growth. For this reason, the fruit bush should be planted in full sun. The currants will grow in any type of soil. It's best to give the tree extra water during dry spells.

The top of the root ball should be slightly below ground level. Don't plant it too deep! Fill the hole with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting. Spacing between the bushes is approximately one metre.

White Currants 'White Pearl' are very easy-to-grow currant bushes. During dry periods water more often. In the spring, give them some potassium-rich garden fertilizer. After three years, you can prune all of its branches by 1/3. It is also possible to train the branches down with wires. To protect against the birds from eating the buds it is advisable to put a netting over the bush.
