Clematis "Piilu", Pink - Hardy plant

Clematis 'Piilu'
Two different types of flowers
One plant with two types of flowers? That's the one and only clematis "Piilu" in a nursery pot. In the spring, the "Piilu" produces lovely, pink double flowers. During the summer it blooms even more, with many single flowers. It is a true climbing plant. It can always use a helping hand to get further. Plant the clematis near a wall or divider, or have it grow along a pergola. In order for the plant to grow upwards, it needs to be secured. It is easily done using a rope, wire, or anything similar. The clematis will thrive in a spacious pot on the patio, roof terrace or balcony. For full growth, we recommend using three plants per metre. The clematis is a deciduous plant. Cold temperatures are no problem for this winter-hardy climber. Pruning is not necessary. However, dead and damaged twigs should be removed. The clematis grows in humus-rich, moisture-retaining soil. Water it regularly to keep the soil moist. It's best to give them extra water during dry periods. And they need sufficient light in order to grow well. The clematis grows best in full or half sun.

Prior to planting make sure that the root ball of clematis ‘Piilur’ is soaked well by placing in a bucket full of lukewarm water. Prepare a suitable hole in good, well-drained loose soil. Clematis 'Piilu' will thrive with a mix of nutritious compost in the garden soil. Place the roots of the clematis at the right depth in the hole - the top of the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil, press firmly down and water immediately after planting. Place this climber in complete sunshine or partial shade.

Clematis 'Piilu' makes a great companion plant

The large-flowered clematis 'Piilu' looks beautiful when combined with roses. Plant clematis 'Piilu' next to the rose 'Sterling Silver' for a magical combination. This compact clematis can also be ideal for growing in a large flower pot. Give the branches some support with some type of climbing frame.

The clematis really dislikes dry soil, so water more often during dry periods. They like to keep their ‘feet' cool and damp whilst the foliage is in the sun - clematis will appreciate you planting low-growing plants around the base or covering with a mulch of garden compost mixed with fertiliser. This climbing plant grows well along a fence or pergola. Help them climb and fill in gaps by twining their new shoots around a support as they grow.

Pruning clematis 'Piilu'

The clematis 'Piilu' is early-flowering and has large flowers. You can lightly prune all of the stems back to a strong pair of buds in March. Remove dead and damaged stems and cut off any faded flowers during the summer.

The 'Piilu' clematis is a unique variety with large pink flowers. The petals have a broad pink stripe and the centre is filled with white stamens. A compact grower, this clematis can grow to 2-3 metres high and the flowers will form on last year's shoots. A first bloom will have double flowers but more will appear later in the summer that are single!
