As soon as possible after receiving Schlumbergera, plant it in a spacious pot. Choose a pot with holes in the base with a matching dish, so that any excess water can drain away. Or use an ornamental pot in which the irrigation water from the inner pot is collected. Sprinkle a layer of hydro granules over the bottom of the pot, cover with fresh potting compost and plant the root ball of the Schlumbergera at the right depth. Fill the pot with more compost and press firmly. Keep the soil just below the rim so there is room for watering. Water well immediately after planting and put the flower pot in a moderately warm, rather light spot (not direct sunlight).
Keep the soil around the Schlumbergera moderately moist. The soil may be on the dry side. Rather than watering little and often, occasionally, water generously. Preferably use rain water. Make sure that the pot has adequate drainage so that the bottom of the pot does not become water logged. The flower buds are formed during the rest period, which starts from the beginning of August. For about three months keep the plant relatively dry and cool (12-15 ° C), in a bright spot. Water gradually once the buds are visible and keep in a warmer spot. Every spring during March-April repot into fresh compost. From late May the plant can be taken outdoors into a shady spot. From now until the beginning of August add plant food regularly when watering.
Schlumbergera is a very special indoor plant that flowers wonderfully in the winter. The flowers are very elegantly shaped, the bright pink petals are slightly darker at the tips. Because of the hanging habit of the flowers the Schlumbergera looks beautiful in a hanging basket or in a tall pot. Also called Zygocactus or the Christmas cactus.
