Chinese Juniper (Juniperus chinensis) grows best in the garden. They do require permeable, well-drained soil, somewhat clay based and none too wet. These are totally hardy plants.
Make sure the root ball of the Chinese juniper is soaked well prior to planting - stand the plant in a bucket of lukewarm water overnight. Prepare a large hole and loosen the soil thoroughly with a fork. Plant your juniper at the correct depth - the top of the root ball should come to just below soil level. Fill the hole with soil and heel well in. Water immediately after planting. Improve your garden soil with the addition of some compost and peat. This conifer will thank you for a spot in full sun or partial shade.

In case you wondered... this Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis) will also thrive in a large planter on your patio or decking! Water regularly, but do ensure good drainage.
Chinese Juniper (Juniperus chinensis) requires no pruning. A slow growing conifer, it wouldn't hurt it, but it will actually be much better if you leave it be. Keep pruning to the absolute minimum and only remove irregular growth, such as when a branch sticks out the wrong way from its conical habit.
Do water extra in periods of drought. You can feed this conifer in the growing season.
