Planting+

Carrot seed requires no special preparation. Try sowing a row of carrots every 3 weeks, then you will always have fresh carrots to hand.

The bio-gardener sows alternate rows of carrot with onion.

How to Sow

Sow in the ground, preferably in full sun, from March to August.
Sow indoors from mid-January to March.

There are two ways to sow:

  1. In the garden, preferably full sun, March to August. Loosen the soil to at least 30 cm deep. Prepare a grove 1 cm deep and label the row. Mix the fine carrot seed with a little sand and using your thumb and forefinger sprinkle the seeds into the soil, sowing as thinly as possible Cover with the seed to 0.5 cm. Press the soil lightly down and sprinkle with water. Recommended spacing between rows: 20 cm.
  2. From mid-January, sow seeds in trays/boxes under glass - cold frame or indoors. Fill the trays/boxes with good fine seeding compost, mix the seeds with some dry sand and sow evenly over the compost. Then cover the seeds with a layer of the compost (5 mm or less), press lightly down and sprinkle with water, then cover with a sheet of glass (or the lid of your propagator). Place the trays/boxes in the light, at room temperature or in the cold frame. Once the seeds have germinated, remove the glass plate (lid).
Seeds germinate in 6-14 days. Approximately 2-3 weeks later, the seedlings can be thinned and planted out (about 2 cm apart). They must be planted with the root straight down. Do not wait too long before planting as the carrot has a tap root and when they are too long, they are more difficult to plant.

Care+

There is no need to add extra fertiliser... your carrots do not require it. Water more often during dry periods. Keep the plot weed free as this helps to promote the growth of the roots.

Harvesting

Harvest period: June to November.

The smell of slightly damaged carrots during harvesting attracts the carrot fly. To prevent damage to the harvest, harvest the entire row and do not be tempted to pull a handful of carrots every few days. It is best to harvest with a fork.

Simply place the fork along the plants and lift the earth to release the carrots. Summer carrots can be harvested from late spring to autumn. Winter carrots can be harvested from autumn until the moment it starts freezing.

Extra+

Carrots are orange which is the colour of the Netherlands ‘Royals’. In the 17th century, ships of the VOC brought back with them a purple carrot discovered in Iran. The Dutch market gardeners, very patriotic, multiplied trials, successfully, to give carrots an orange colour. There is a range of various colours available. The seedlings can withstand some frost but fully grown carrots cannot and must be harvested before the first frost.

The 'Amsterdamse Bak' is the ideal sweet and juicy early carrot and is very popular as well as delicious! A fast grower, they can also be sown late and are easily grown.

The late carrot 'Major F1 hybrid (Daucus carota) is the champion of all winter carrots and the least affected by frost. Very prolific, the 'Major F1 hybrid is tasty and has a nice uniform look about it.
