Prepare a suitable hole for planting your Super Blueberry 'Patriot'. They like moisture-retentive, acid soil, so improve your soil with ericaceous compost. Make sure the root ball of Super Blueberry 'Patriot' is well-moistened before planting by soaking it in a bucket of lukewarm water. Plant the Super Blueberry 'Patriot' at the appropriate depth in the hole. The top of the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting. Plant the bushes 1.5 m apart. Plant this bush in a sunny or partially shady area.
Blueberries in a large planter
Did you know that a blueberry bush will also thrive in a large planter on your patio or decking? A blueberry bush in a planter will remain somewhat more compact so of course it's perfectly suitable for on the patio/decking. And you can always prune it too.
Do choose a nice sturdy planter. Layer the base with potsherds or even a couple of bricks for weight then fill about 2/3 with potting compost with some added sand and normal garden soil. Remove the blueberry bush from its nursery pot and plant it with the roots spread out a little. Fill up with more of the same potting compost. Press well in. Leave a good 4 cm space from top of soil to the edge of the pot, for watering. Water generously then stand your large planter with blueberry bush in a nice sunny spot.
Feed Super Blueberries 'Patriot' during the year with a fertilizer that contains calcium (such as potassium sulphate), and provide it with some compost. Shade is well-tolerated. Give the plant extra water during dry periods. When the beautiful blueberries are slightly soft at the touch, they are ready for picking. In June you will be rewarded with your first pickings, and August will be the end of the fruiting season. They can be eaten fresh, but they are also ideal for jam making. Freezing berries is also possible. You rarely need to prune blueberries. Keep about six to eight branches on each bush. Remove the oldest branches to allow new shoots to grow.
Blueberries in the winter
Blueberry bushes are perfectly hardy and can basically manage through the winter without extra protection. However, potted bushes are of course more sensitive to frost so we advise standing the pot in a sheltered spot over the winter. An unheated shed for a short while would be ok too.
Super Blueberry 'Patriot' is a shrub that can easily grow to be two metres tall. In the spring, it blooms with attractive flowers. In the autumn, you can admire its striking autumn colours. The large fruits of this plant have firm flesh and are very tasty. Super Blueberries 'Patriot' make the best kind of berry jam, it is a must for the kitchen cupboard! Blueberries are very healthy as well as high in vitamin C.
