Planting+

Monarda is a perennial that will thank you for planting it in the garden. Dig a wide hole and fork the soil well loose. Improve poor garden soil with the additional mix of well-rotted manure and fertiliser pellets. Plant your bee-calm at the correct depth - the top of the root ball should come to just below soil level. Fill the hole and heel well in. Water generously immediately. Monarda will thrive in a sunny spot or in part shade, in permeable, nutritious soil.

Bee-Balm in the garden

The lovely blooms on Monarda should always be in a colourful summer border. They will look their best beside other summer flowering plants such as the Delphinium or Leucanthemum and red coneflower (Echinacea). Will also be very successful looking when mixed in with ornamental grasses. Bee-balm looks very natural so is great for a wild garden or mingled amongst your grasses. These plants and their flowers all look best when planted in groups, waving in the wind. A great plant for naturalising. On the patio or decking, compact growing Monarda will also thrive in a large planter.

Care+

Bee-Balm (Monarda) is a hardy perennial that needs regular watering to keep the root ball from drying out. A too dry spot will not be tolerated, especially if potted. Dead head the flowers when they're over, back to a new side shoot and you will encourage new growth. This plant will flower the summer through. The plant will die back for the winter so mulch the plants with leaf litter and well-rotted manure plus fertiliser pellets. Remove old foliage in the spring and you will soon see new shoots appear. Bakker advises lifting and dividing this plant every couple of years.

Extra+

Nowadays there are many different cultivars of Monarda available in a wide range of colours. Bee-balm is an exuberant flowering perennial with lovely, striking, brightly coloured flowers. The flower heads are adorned with a thick wreath of tubular petals flowering from the centre to the edge. Among the flowers are decorative bracts.
Bee-balm foliage is very aromatic – rub it gently between your fingers and smell the delightful fragrance. Kind of like have a spicy orange in your hand! The leaves are indeed cultivated for their oil content and used in aroma therapy.
Bee-balm is classified under the mint family (Lamiaceae).
