Beautiful tulips in the garden!

A mix of colours and fragrances! The tulip and daffodil mix 'Darwin Hybrid' is a popular choice thanks to the large, cup-shaped flowers on long, sturdy stems. The mix consists of the most cheerful colours and the most radiant flowers. Plant the bulbs in the autumn. In open ground or in a large pot. The flowers will bloom in the spring.
Protect the potted flower bulbs in winter by covering the soil with a layer of autumn leaves. In the event of severe frost, temporarily place the pot in a shed or protect it with bubble wrap. When planting in the open ground, maintain a planting distance of three times the width of the flower bulb. Plant the bulb the depth of three times the bulb's height. When planted in a pot, the flower bulbs can be somewhat closer together. Put the flower bulbs in the sun or partial shade. The flower bulbs grow beautifully without needing extra water.

Planting
As soon as possible after receiving the tulip mix 'Darwin hybrid' bulbs they can be planted in the garden, a flower pot or in a planter. If not they must be kept in a frost-free area. Bulbs planted in a flower pot are not usually frost resistant. Plant the bulbs in a planting hole that is three times as deep as the height of the bulbs. A bulb of 5 cm should be planted in a 15 cm deep hole. The planting distance of tulip mix 'Darwin hybrid' is about 10 cm. Loosen the soil well and plant the bulbs with the point facing upwards. Refill the planting hole and avoid walking over the soil. Plant the tulips one by one with a small trowel or with a special bulb planter. For larger groups make a wider hole and plant more bulbs in it. The more flower bulbs planted, the greater effect the flowers will have. Plant the tulips in groups of at least 6 bulbs, or divide about 25 to 50 flower bulbs evenly over the garden border or flower bed. 'Darwin Hybrid' Tulips Mixed in a pot These 'Darwin Hybrid' tulips are an excellent choice for flower pots or patio planters. Make sure you use fresh potting compost and put a layer of gravel or hydro granules at the bottom of the pot. Place the bulbs in a planting hole three times as deep as the height of the bulb. A bulb of 5 cm should be planted in a 15 cm deep hole. The planting distance of the Darwin tulips in a pot is about 7 cm. For extra colour in the pot, plant low growing anemones just above the tulip bulbs, which will flower beautifully below the tulips.
Care
The flowers of the Tulip Mix 'Darwin hybrid' are at their best in the first year. That’s why we recommend each year adding new and extra bulbs to make your borders and pots even more colourful. Darwin tulips grow best in loose, well-drained soil in a spot in full sun. To protect the bulbs grown in a pot against frost, place the pot in a frost-free area or cover it with bubble wrap. Water during dry periods. Tulips that have not been planted are sensitive to frost but once planted out in the garden, they are perfectly hardy.
Tulips planted in pots are more sensitive and will need to be protected in one of the following ways:
  • Store your potted tulips in a frost-free area that doesn't get too warm - they do need the cold.
  • Wrap the pot(s) in bubble wrap for extra protection.
  • If you line their pot(s) with bubble wrap before adding soil and planting your bulbs, your tulips will already have some protection.
Extra
Species tulips are available in various shapes, sizes and colours! Over the years, thousands of cultivars have been developed - which means there is a tulip available to suit everyone’s preference.
A short anthology... There are various tulip shapes - common tulips, doubles, lily flowering, parrot tulips, fringed, large flowering and also 'botanical' tulips. They all vary in length of stem - long stemmed are 40-60 cm, mid-length are 20-40 cm and the shortest stemmed tulips are up to 20 cm tall. Then there are multiple flowering tulips. Plus we have to take into account the varrying flowering times - earlies (mid-March) to lates (mid-May).
The mid-length and long stemmed (so, taller than 20 cm) varieties are particularly suited as cut flowers in a pretty vase.
All tulips are classified under Liliaceae.
