Planting
Plant your Allium schubertii bulbs in the garden, in planters or flower pots as soon as possible after receipt. If not, the Allium bulbs must be stored in a frost free place until planted. Pots also do not generally withstand frost. Place the bulbs in a hole that is 3 times as deep as the height of the bulb – a 5cm bulb therefore goes in a 15 cm hole. Planting distance for this Allium is about 30 cm.
Loosen the soil with a fork and plant the bulbs with their roots down. Refill the hole and avoid walking over the planting area. Ornamental Onion Allium schubertii thrives in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or part shade. Allium shubertii in the garden Allium shubertii is an ornamental onion of medium height that looks wonderful in borders and beds. The more you plant, the better the effect so plant the Allium in groups of five between lower growing plants in your beds. Or, divide 10-20 bulbs evenly over the border or bed. Alliums look great together with low growing summer bloomers and ground cover in beds and borders.
Care
Allium schubertii bulbs can stay planted in the same place for years on end. Remove the overblown flowers and stems when they turn brown to ensure that all the energy goes to the bulb. Only remove Allium schubertii leaves after they have turned yellow. Try to avoid the soil being too wet, especially in the winter months as this is not well tolerated.
Extra
Each stem of the Allium shubertii is strong enough to carry the large flower ball with its pink female florets on short stalks and male florets on long stalks! The resulting chaotic looking flower looks fantastic with a diameter of up to 30 cm! This is one of the largest ornamental onion flowers.
