You can plant the Ismene bulbs immediately after receiving them in either the ground or in a pot. Beware of night frosts. When planting the bulbs, make sure that the depth of the hole is twice as large as the height of the bulb. A 5 cm bulb needs to be planted in a 10 cm hole. The spacing of the Hymenocallis is approximately 20 cm. Plant the bulbs in good, well-drained soil, with the point upwards and roots down, then refill the hole with soil. You can plant them individually or in small groups.
Ismene in a flower pot or planter
The Hymenocallis festalis grows best in a flower pot or planter in a warm, sheltered area. Just three bulbs in a pot will produce a remarkable result. Place the pot with the Hymenocallis festalis ‘Zwanenburg’ next to a bird of paradise (Strelitzia Reginae) for an exotic atmosphere on your patio.
Water your Hymenocallis festalis 'Zwanenburg' regularly to prevent the soil around the bulbs from drying out. Removing faded flowers will encourage flowering. For an extra rich flowering of 'Zwanenburg' we recommend regularly adding plant food to the water during the summer.
The bulbs of Hymenocallis festalis 'Zwanenburg' are not hardy, but they are fairly easy to overwinter. Move the pot to a frost-free area for winter protection. Reduce watering, try and keep the compost moist. Increase watering in the spring and you will soon be seeing young leaves shooting. You can now water regularly, adding plant food to the water. Gradually let Ismene get used to the outdoors again and when there are no more night frosts, Zwanenburg 'Festalis Hymenocallis can be brought outdoors onto your patio or decking.
In addition to its name Ismene is also called the 'Spider Lily' due to the particular quirky shape of its flowers. The exotic flowers are something special similar to the flowers of orchids and daffodils.
