Planting+

Dahlia tubers can be planted in spring. Low growing bed dahlias are sensitive to frost, so do watch out for late night frost. From late April until mid-May is a good period to plant dahlias. Make a sufficiently large planting hole, loosen the soil and fill the hole with fertile soil. Carefully place the tubers in the planting hole and cover with 3-5 cm of soil. Place the tubers of the Top Mix dahlias approximately 30 cm apart. Press down carefully and water immediately. Dahlias will have the richest bloom in full sun.

Forcing your dahlias

It is possible to bring your dahlias into flower earlier by 'forcing' them.
Lay the dahlia tubers in moist compost from the beginning of April, at a temperature of 15-20°  C. Pot your dahlia tubers up when you see the first shoots appear and from the start of May you can gradually acclimatise them to going outdoors. Mid-May, your dahlia tubers can finally go outdoors into the garden or in pots.

Care+

If you add fertiliser each month, your Top Mix dahlias will continue to flower until the first night frost. Remove spent flowers for good new growth. Make sure the soil does not dry out during dry periods.

Overwintering dahlias

It is very easy to overwinter dahlia tubers. Uproot the Top Mix dahlias after the first night frost. Cut off all stems 15 cm above the tuber. Attach a label with the name to the tuber. In this way you will know which dahlia you are dealing with next spring. Shake the soil off the dahlia tuber, place the dahlia in a box with peat dust or sharp sand and store it in a frost-free room. Next spring you will be able to plant the Top Mix dahlias again and you will be rewarded with magnificent flowers.

Extra+

It is possible to make your Top Mix dahlia tubers bloom extra early. For this, place the tubers in moist peat dust from April, at 15-20 °C. When shoots appear, you can pot them in potting compost. Allow dahlias to get used to the outdoor temperature in early May. You can plant them outdoors in open ground or in a pot from mid-May.
