You can plant Thymus serpyllum immediately upon receipt, in a flower pot, window-box or in the garden. Are you planting it in a pot? Choose a pot with holes in the base and cover the bottom with a layer of potsherds or hydrograins. Put fresh potting soil in the pot and plant the root ball of of Thymus serpyllum at the correct depth. The planting distance should be 5-10 cm apart from each other. Fill with soil and press firmly. Give it plenty of water immediately after planting. Place the pot in a sunny spot. If planting in the ground, space further apart. Improve your garden soil by mixing in some sharp sand.
Thymus serpyllum does not tolerated soil that is too wet. This fragrant plant grows best in a sunny area with well-drained, relatively dry soil. The evergreen thyme can suffer from frost. Cut off any unpleasant-looking twigs throughout the year.
