Astilbe hybrids grow well in the garden. Soak the roots in water for one hour prior to planting. Prepare a large hole and loosen the soil. Improve poor garden soil by working in some compost. Plant the roots of the astilbe at the correct depth, about 5 cm below ground level. Fill the hole with soil, press firmly and water thoroughly after planting. The astilbe hybrids grow well and flourish in a sunny spot, semi shade or a shady position in humus-rich, moist soil.
Astilbe hybrids are easy to grow perennials. Make sure the soil around the roots does not dry out as drought is poorly tolerated. The soil should remain slightly moist, especially when the plants are placed in a sunny area. In winter the stems above the ground dieback. Cover the plants in winter with a layer of fallen leaves. In spring, cut off all the leaves. Soon you will soon see new shoots appearing above the ground. Temporarily cover the Astilbe if there are signs of late night frosts.
Mixed Astilbe are fantastic flowerers, with their beautiful colours they provide lots of colour even in shady areas. The flower panicles remain decorative well into the winter, so don't cut them off until the spring. The flower panicles look very attractive in a flower arrangement. This plant is often called by its former name, Spirea.
