Enjoy all year long!

If you want a plant that blooms all year round, you definitely won't get bored with this arum (Arum italicum)! It starts blooming with red-flecked leaves in spring. In summer, the arum's berries turn bright red and stay this colour right through into winter. During autumn, it also grows an arrow-shaped leaf. Plant the bulbs in the spring. In well-drained soil. The flowers bloom in the spring.
The bulbs can be planted in open ground or in a pot. Potted bulbs aren't frost hardy, so bring the pot indoors or protect the plant with bubble wrap. Space the bulbs out when planting in open ground. The distance between plants is three times the width of the bulb. Plant the bulb the depth of three times the bulb's height. Plant the bulbs in full sun or partial shade. Water the bulb immediately after planting. Don't water it until the soil feels dry to the touch. 0

How do I plant the Italian calla lily?
The Arum italicum is naturally found in forests. That’s why the bulb is fond of humic, calcareous and moderately moist soil. And, of course, a place with quite a bit of shadow. It needs some sunlight to grow, but placing it in direct sunlight is more than it can handle.

Dig a spacious hole of about 10 cm deep and loosen the soil well. Improve the condition of the bottom by adding in potting soil and lime. Make sure that the bulb shoots upwards. Fill the hole up with soil, press it down and water it straight away.
A garden corner with fairly moist soil is ideal for your zantedeschias and will look stunning combined with hostas. The blue-green leaf hosta especially will contrast beautifully with the white inflorescences of the arum. Various colours of arum lily together in a large planter can also look quite spectacular.
Care
What do I need?

  • Cow manure pellets

How do I care for the Italian calla lily?
The Italian calla lily doesn't require a lot of care. The bulb will become larger every year. The bottom must remain moist but can get a bit dryer in autumn. When the leaves grow in autumn, it is a good idea to add a little fertiliser. That strengthens the plant for next season!
Extra
Did you know that the inflorescence of the arum lily is actually a bract and not a flower - what we see as a flower, actually isn't. The true flowers are tiny and sit on a yellow spadix which is surrounded by the graceful bract. Because this bract remains beautiful for a long time zantedeschia is a popular cut flower. If you want to pick one for indoors, very gently pull the whole stem from the plant. The arrow-shaped and often spotted leaves can also be used in flower arrangements. Zantedeschia is also called the calla lily.
