Beautiful, hardy hedge

Want a beautiful, hardy hedge? This European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) in a nursery pot is perfect! Its green leaves with brown veins look amazing in any garden. During the winter, the leaves fall off the hedge. They return in full over the summer. The hornbeam is very hardy, surviving practically every climate. It also serves as a tall barrier in the garden. For a dense hedge, we plant five shrubs per metre. The hedge should be pruned twice per year. Once in the spring and once in the autumn. For the best results, give the hedge ‘beech and hedge’ food. The hedge will grow in any moist, well-drained soil. Make sure that the ground stays moist during the initial period after planting. It's best to give them extra water during dry periods. And they need sufficient light in order to grow well. The hedge grows best in full or half sun.

Planting
Plant your Hornbeam in a hole 60-80 cm deep. Improve the soil with compost and manure. Add heavy clay soil as well as some sharp sand. Soak the plants in water for one hour before planting. Divide the hedges into each hole, placing five hedges for every metre. You can also plant a double row of hedges. The top of the root ball should be equal to ground level in the garden (please note that some land will collapse). Fill with soil, and give it lots of water so that it almost turns into a swamp. It is advised to prune the top of the hedges immediately after planting. Water after planting and regularly at the start of each spring.
Care
Hornbeam is an easy-growing, deciduous that requires minimal maintenance. Be sure to prevent the roots from drying out during the first few months after planting. It needs enough light for a good growth. You can also plant some bushes or large perennials next to the hedge. During the winter, a mulch of compost and granulated cow manure will be greatly appreciated. The Hornbeam needs to be pruned The Hornbeam should be pruned twice a year in order to keep a pretty tight shape and not let the hedge grow too wide. A good time to prune is in early to mid-June. It is best to prune the hedge so that it is slightly wider at the bottom. Do you prefer a straight cut? Tie a rope across the top of the hedge. The Hornbeam should be pruned again in the winter.
Extra
The Hornbeam is a large tree, but it also makes a great hedge plant. It is somewhat similar to the Beech, but the leaves are folded over and completely fall of in the autumn. However, the Hornbeam grows faster than the Beech and is ideal as a high hedge in the garden!
