Make sure that the roots of the Yucca filamentosa are well-moistened before planting by soaking in a bucket full of lukewarm water. Prepare a large hole, approximately 30 x 30 x 30 cm and loosen the soil. Plant the root ball of Adam's Needle at the appropriate depth in the hole. The top of the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting. Yucca filamentosa grows best in well-drained, calcareous soil. Improve heavy garden soil by mixing in some sharp sand.

Adam's Needle as a container plant

Yucca filamentosa is a hardy plant that is also suitable as a container plant. Both in the garden and in a pot it will add an exotic touch with its beautiful appearance. Use a large planter or pot with holes in the base. On your patio combine this plant with Bougainvillea or even a Lemon Tree for a tropical atmosphere.

Yucca filamentosa requires minimal maintenance and is highly resistant to drought. Wet soil is not well-tolerated during the winter. You can completely cut off faded flower stalks. Adam's Needle is a strong evergreen plant. Protect the young plants from severe frost by using straw or a reed mat.

The flowers are bell-shaped. The narrow leaves are greyish-green with sharp points. The thick, fleshy leaves can store lots of moisture, so this plant can survive well through dry periods. Useful for planting as a solitary feature.
