Asian atmosphere
This combination of Japanese jewel orchids brings Asia a little closer to home. The colours create a serene atmosphere in your garden. The flowers of the jewel orchid (Bletilla Striata) mix are blue, purple and white. Plant the tubers in the spring. The flowers bloom in the summer.
Space the tubers out when planting. The distance between plants is three times the width of the tuber. Plant the tuber the depth of three times the tuber's height. Plant the tubers in partial shade. Water the tuber immediately after planting. Then keep the soil moist. The bulbs come in organic packaging. Made of 100% natural materials and 100% recyclable!
All our flower bulbs have the A quality mark of the Holland Selection and come with a 100% guarantee that they will grow and bloom. You can be certain that the flower bulbs will grow.

Planting+

Plant the Chinese orchid tubers in a well-drained spot in humus rich soil that will stay moist throughout the summer, or improve the soil to the extent that it is sandy and humus rich – clay soil is not a problem. If the soil is too moist you can plant the tubers in a raised bed. A slightly shaded spot will be most appreciated by this hardy orchid. Full sun is OK, but beware of the soil drying out. The tubers must be planted 5 cm deep.

Hardy orchids in a pot

Bletilla striata can also be grown in pots or planters. Use a pot with holes in the base and line the bottom with pot shards or gravel before adding humus-rich potting compost mixed with some sand. Plant the tubers 5 cm deep and water well. The plants will also bloom indoors. Place the pot out of direct sunlight although morning or evening sun is fine. The pot can go outdoors again after flowering.

Care+

Bletilla striata is very undemanding. Just some extra water in periods of drought will be appreciated. The plants form a clump and can remain in the same place for many years. After 4 years the plant can be divided, but this is not strictly necessary. Hardy orchids in pots must not be allowed to dry out so do make sure that the soil is kept moist. Feed with an organic fertiliser in the spring but use half the recommended dosage as orchids generally do not require a lot of feeding.

Hardy orchids in the winter

Bletilla striata is reasonably winter hardy. A mulch of leaf litter for the winter is advisable. The tubers will shoot again in the spring. The Bletilla striata is of course more sensitive to frost when planted in a pot. These are best stored in a frost-free, dark area but do not let the roots dry out in winter. The pots can go outside again as soon as there are no longer signs of frost.

Extra+

This ground orchid is known for being one of the easiest orchids to grow. Ordinary potting compost is enough for this orchid and when planted in the garden there is no need to move it indoors for the winter.
