Romantic red
A dahlia is always the right choice. But the dahlia 'Red Pygmy' is perfect for any back garden! The red flowers with lush petals give the dahlia a dreamy look. Dahlias make exceptional cut flowers. They're lovely in a bouquet, too! Plant the tubers in the spring. The flowers bloom in the summer and autumn.
Space the tubers out when planting. The distance between plants is three times the width of the tuber. Plant the tuber the depth of three times the tuber's height. The amount of sunlight doesn't matter for dahlias. Water the tuber immediately after planting. Then water weekly. Planting+

In spring you can start planting the dahlia tubers. Dahlias are sensitive to frost, so do watch out for late night frost. From late April to mid-May is a good period to plant dahlias in open ground. Make a sufficiently large plant hole and fill it with fertile soil. Carefully place the tubers in the plant hole and cover with 3-5 cm soil. Place the tubers of the patio dahlia 'Red Pigmy' approximately 30 cm apart. Press the soil gently and water immediately. Dahlias will provide the richest bloom in full sun.

Forcing dahlias to bloom early

It is possible to get dahlia tubers to bloom extra early. For this, place them in moist peat dust from early April, at 15-20° C. When shoots appear, you can pot them in potting compost. Allow the dahlias to get used to the outdoor temperature in early May and plant them outdoors in open ground or in a flower pot from mid-May.

Care+

By adding fertiliser each month, your patio dahlia 'Red Pigmy' will continue to flower until the first night frost. Prune any dead flowers, to encourage further flowering in autumn. Make sure the soil does not dry out during dry periods.

Overwintering dahlias

Overwintering dahlia tubers is very easy. Uproot the plants after the first night frost. Cut off all stems 15 cm above the tuber. Attach a label with the dahlia name to the tuber. In this way you will know which dahlia it is next spring. Shake the soil from the tubers and place the dahlias in a box with peat dust or sharp sand. Store the dahlia tubers in a frost-free room. Next spring you will be able to plant them again, and they will reward you with magnificent flowers.

Extra+

This relatively small yet highly versatile genus originates for the most part from Central America. Throughout the world it has been cross-fertilized and selected, resulting in many thousands of cultivars. They vary dramatically in height, flower colours, flower sizes and flower shapes! As a result, the dahlia cultivars have been subdivided into different flower shape groups. Dahlia 'Red Pigmy' has been classified under the Cactus group.

Dahlia 'Red Pigmy' is a low growing dahlia, and is also referred to as a patio dahlia. These are perfect in pots and borders.

Dahlia is part of the aster family or family of composite flowers (Asteraceae or Compositae).
