Planting
Plant your grape hyacinths as soon as possible after receipt in the garden, pots or window-boxes – keep frost-free until then. The bulbs should be planted in a hole 3 times deeper than the height of the bulb - a 2 cm bulb goes in a 6 cm hole. loosen the soil with a fork and plant the bulb roots down. Refill the hole and avoid walking over where planted. The more bulbs, the better the effect. Plant in groups of at least 25 bulbs, or divide up to 50 bulbs evenly over the border or flower bed. Grape hyacinths in pots Grape hyacinth (Muscari armeniacum) thrive in pots or window-boxes too. Ensure fresh potting compost and layer the bottom with gravel or hydro-pellets. The hole should be 3 times the height of the bulb. The pink variety of the Forget-me-not is perfect for growing amongst these lovely coloured grape hyacinths.
Care
Muscari armeniacum is a small bulb, ideally suited to naturalising. The bulbs can stay in the same place for years on end. For best results, we advise feeding with Bakker's bulb fertiliser immediately following flowering. This will guarantee profuse flowering in the following year, especially if you only cut back the foliage once it has turned yellow. Growing in the lawn? Then hold off mowing the grass until all muscari leaves are yellow. This way, your Muscari armeniacum will reward you with even more flowers. If replanting at all, do so immediately after flowering. Protect potted bulbs from frost by storing in a frost-free position or wrapping in bubble wrap. Water in periods of drought.
Extra
The grape hyacinths (or blue grape hyacinth) are very popular and all varieties (pink and white too) get lovelier and even fuller, every year. You will be surprised just how lovely such a small flower can be. Really the perfect flower for naturalising!
