This spectacle is a must-have! The yellow iris (Iris pseudacorus) adds drama to our pond with it sword-shaped leaves and big yellow flowers. This iris can grow up to 80 cm high! The plant even keeps algae at bay! The aquatic plant is a waterside and marsh plant. We can plant the plant along the edge (bank) of our pond. Or we can plant the iris up to 40 cm deep in the pond. We can plant this perennial all year round, The flower blossoms in the summer.
We prune the plant slightly to shape it with a pruning shear. We remove old leaves and dirt. To encourage good growth, we add minerals to the pond water and ensure that the water's hardness level (pH value and calcium to magnesium ratio) is maintained. Put the iris in a sunny spot.

Yellow Flag Iris is a fast-growing aquatic plant that is best used in a pond basket. Cover the basket with jute and fill the pond with special soil. Plant the Yellow Flag Iris in the basket, fill with soil and add a growth ball. Cover everything with the remaining jute and sprinkle with a layer of gravel. Place the basket just below the surface or up to 30 cm deep in the pond. If your pond is not too shallow, you can place your basket within a pile of stones. This plant can also grow in a large tub with water. Place this plant in complete or partial sunshine. The best time to plant is between May and June.

Yellow Flag Iris is excellent combined with other plants

For a natural effect, the Yellow Flag Iris can be easily combined with Typha Angustifolia and Butomus Umbellatus, which are both endemic species. You can place the Yellow Flag Iris in a large, watertight container with damp soil. The Yellow Flag Iris tends to grow too large for a small pond.

The Yellow Flag Iris is a very strong aquatic plant that requires minimal maintenance. Cut off its dead leaves in autumn and remove them from the pond. Yearly, in the spring you can add a growth ball to the pond basket. If the clump grows too large by May, you should take the Yellow Flag Iris out of the pond. Divide the clump into smaller pieces and plant only one piece back inside the pond.

The Yellow Flag Iris is not frost resistant

The roots of the Yellow Flag Iris do not tolerate frost. Therefore, protect its root ball against severe frost. You can place the basket deeper into the pond during the winter so that it stays under the ice. You can also put the Yellow Flag Iris in a basket (in a tub of water) and place it in a frost-free area.

The iris has its own family - the Iridaceae.
