Philodendron bipinnatifidum 'Atom'
Jungle plant
Bring the jungle into your home with the Philodendron. The Philodendron has thick stems with big tropical leaves. We are mad about this houseplant! The plant is easy to care for and very strong. This tropical plant needs very high humidity. Keep the soil moist. The tropical houseplant loves being in a light spot. But it can also tolerate (partial) shade.

You have several options upon receipt of this plant:

  • Cover the base of a pretty planter with potsherds or a layer or hydro-pellets - preferably one with holes for drainage. Stand the Philodendron bipinnatifidum, including nursery pot, in this pot and water immediately.
  • Remove the plant from its nursery pot and plant it up in a pot with drainage holes - do layer the bottom with potsherds or hydro-pellets and some fresh potting compost. Plant the Philodendron bipinnatifidum at the correct depth and fill up with potting compost. Press well down and water immediately.
  • Just stand it, nursery pot too, in a saucer for catching the drain-off. Water immediately and don't allow it to stand in any water for longer than one day.
Stand the plant in a light spot in your home as long as it is out of the midday sun. Do not allow your Philodendron bipinnatifidum to dry out. For repotting use normal potting compost.

The best spot for your houseplant

The best spot for your plant is:

  1. Somewhere nice and light but somewhat out of the brightest sunlight. Morning and evening sun won't be a problem - but the best spot is usually about 3 metres away from a window. This plant will tolerate a lot of shade and even up to 6 metres from the window will be ok.
  2. Somewhere nice and warm - 18-23 °C. Underfloor heating? Perfect! Next to or above a radiator is not advised. Warm air will dry the plant out, leading to brown edges on the leaves.
  3. Although this plant can tolerate the dry air in our homes, it will thrive with a relatively humid atmosphere (50-60%). Spraying the leaves regularly will help to achieve this. Several times a day will be appreciated.

Philodendron bipinnatifidum is a genuine rain-forest plant that really doesn't like direct sunlight! Although it will tolerate our dry interiors, it will thrive better in a humid atmosphere so do spray it regularly with (rain) water to keep the leaves nice and shiny. Dried edges on the leaves could indicate a too dry atmosphere for the plant.
Water regularly (2x per week, spring and summer, 1x per week in the winter). Feed fortnightly in the growing season with fertiliser for leafy plants.
Give your philodendron bipinnatifidum a warm spot (no less than 15 degrees C) out of direct sunlight.

Turn your Philodendron into a plant that grows hydroculturally

This houseplant is easy to grow hydroculturally. Just remove the plant from its pot and carefully rinse off all soil from the roots with running water. Then rinse the roots with a garden hose until all the soil has gone. Plant the bare root plant in its new planter or pot and fill up with hydro-pellets. Water the plant and feed it with diluted plant food, fortnightly (half dose).

Philodendron bipinnatifidum is one of the Araceae. This plant climbs trees in the Amazon rain-forest and the leaves are much bigger there than in our homes! Although large houseplants varieties can have leaves 40-50 cm across, more compact growers like this 'Atom' can achieve leaves of 15-25 cm long, in ideal circumstances.
It's a lovely leaf that will grow bigger, the better the conditions. The lobed leaves make this plant really decorative. Perfect conditions will have this plant flower with green and white arum lily-like flowers. The actual flowers are pretty unspectacular and grow on a spike in the centre of a large bract.
