Eranthis cilicica
Winter bloomer
The winter aconite (Eranthis cilicica) starts blooming before the end of winter, even with snow on the ground! The plant has cup-shaped yellow flowers that smell like honey. The winter aconite is also known as a spring flower. Plant the bulbs in the spring. In well-drained soil. The flowers bloom at the end of the autumn.
The bulbs can be planted in open ground or in a pot. Potted bulbs aren't frost hardy, so bring the pot indoors or protect the plant with bubble wrap. Space the bulbs out when planting in open ground. The distance between plants is three times the width of the bulb. Plant the bulb the depth of three times the bulb's height. Plant the bulbs in full sun or partial shade. Water the bulb immediately after planting. Don't water it until the soil feels dry to the touch. 0
All our flower bulbs have the Holland Selection A quality mark, and come with a 100% guarantee that they will grow and bloom. You can be certain that the flower bulbs will grow.

Planting+

As soon as possible after receiving the winter aconite tubers they can be planted in the garden, a flower pot or in a planter. If not they must be kept in a frost-free area. Tubers planted in a flower pot are not usually frost resistant.
A good tip is to soak the tubers overnight in tepid water to help them get established more quickly. Plant them approximately 5 cm deep and 3 to 5 cm apart. Loosen the soil well and plant the tubers roots down. Refill the hole and avoid walking over the soil. Plant the winter aconite one by one with a small trowel. For larger groups make a wider hole and plant more tubers together. They grow best in normal garden soil that is not too dry.

Winter Aconite in the winter garden

Large groups of these sunny flowers (Eranthis cilicica) look so amazing and cheerful, the more you plant the more impact they will have. Plant winter aconites in groups of at least 15 tubers, or divide about 25 to 50 or more, evenly over the garden or flower bed. They can also be grown in pots or patio planters. Make sure you use fresh potting compost and put a layer of gravel or hydro-pellets at the bottom of the pot. Winter aconite can also be planted in the lawn or under bushes and adds colour to the lawn during the late winter months. Potted winter aconite is not normally frost resistant so protect the pot or planter by packing it in bubble wrap. Water in periods of drought.

Care+

Eranthis Cilicica corms are ideal for naturalising. Just plant them and enjoy the beautiful results year after year.  They will produce more flowers each year, creating a glorious natural feature in the garden. After flowering, leave the foliage to die down naturally and only cut the leaves back when they turn yellow - also if planted through the lawn. The following spring, Eranthis Cilicica will once more bring colour to the garden.

Extra+

Winter Aconites together with snowdrops, are one of the first spring flowers in the garden. Eranthis cilicica has deeply incised leaves that are formed directly below the flower. The cheerful flowers are reminiscent of buttercups. The plant is able to withstand cold weathers and even survives through the snow. They are a must for the winter garden and mixed with snowdrops are perfect for allowing to naturalise.
