30x Snake's head fritillary Fritillaria meleagris purple-white

As soon as possible after receiving the Fritillaria Meleagris bulbs they can be planted in the garden, a flower pot or in a planter. If not they must be kept in a frost-free area. Bulbs planted in a flower pot are not usually frost resistant. Plant the bulbs in a planting hole 8 to 10 cm deep and approximately 5 cm apart. Loosen the soil well and plant the bulbs with the point facing upwards. Refill the planting hole and avoid walking over the soil. Plant the bulbs one by one with a small trowel. For larger groups make a wider hole and plant more bulbs in it. The more flower bulbs planted, the greater effect the flowers will give. Fritillaria grows best in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Keep the soil moist as they do not like the soil too dry. Leaving Fritillaria meleagris to naturalise Fritillary can still be found in woodlands and wet pastures. This small bulbous plant is ideal for naturalising in the garden. You only have to plant once and each year from one single plant there will be many more flowers. Choosing the correct site for growing fritillaria is important, preferably a fertile, moist, well-drained soil. For a natural effect, scatter the bulbs over the planting area and plant them where they fall. The fritillaria is also a lovely plant grown in a pot and once they have flowered they can be planted in the garden.

Fritillaria meleagris can remain in the same place for many years with very little maintenance required. Once the fritillaries mature they can self-seed and multiply. If growing fritillaries in the lawn you can only mow in the spring after the leaves have turned yellow. To protect the bulbs grown in a pot against frost, place the pot in a frost-free area or cover it with bubble wrap. Water in dry periods.
 

Fritillaria meleagris originates from Europe. The unique striking chequered patterned flower resembles a snake's skin and attracts a lot of attention. The nodding bell-shaped flowers with their chequered pattern look almost as if they have been painted. The pattern is not so noticeable with the white. They provide a striking contrast when planted alongside the purple variety. The first flowers appear on slender stems in April and flowers through May. The flowering period is followed by the attractive seed pods.
