Planting+

Plant your Tulipa 'Paul Scherer' and Tulipa 'Barbados' bulbs a.s.a.p. upon receipt, in the garden or into pots, planters or window-boxes. Do store frost-free until planted. Each bulb goes in a hole three times deeper than the size of the bulb so a 5 cm bulb goes in a 15 cm hole. Plant the bulbs about 7 cm apart. Loosen the soil with a fork and plant each bulb, with the point up and roots down. Fill the hole with soil and try not to walk over the planting area. The more bulbs you plant, the better the effect so plant at least 6 per group or scatter 25-50 bulbs evenly over a bed or border and plant them where they fall.

Potted Tulip 'Paul Scherer' and Tulip 'Barbados'

Both Tulip 'Paul Scherer' and Tulip 'Barbados' bulbs will thrive in pots and planters too. Do ensure fresh potting compost and layer the base of any pot with grit or hydro-pellets. Plant each bulb in a hole three times deeper than the height of the bulb. Add a layer of forget-me-not or anemone bulbs above the tulip bulbs for a colourful addition under the growing tulip flowers.

Care+

Tulipa 'Paul Scherer' and Tulipa 'Barbados' flowers are at their best in the first flowering after planting. Bakker therefore advises planting new bulbs every year. Your 'Paul Scherer' and 'Barbados' tulip bulbs will thrive in loose, well-drained soil in full sun or (part) shade (so anywhere really). Give potted bulbs some extra protection from frost - store the pot frost-free and/or wrap the whole pot in bubble wrap. Water in dry periods.

Tulip bulbs that have not yet been planted in the garden are sensitive to frost but once planted out in the garden, they are perfectly hardy.
Tulips planted in pots are more sensitive and will need to be protected in one of the following ways:

  • Store your potted tulips in a frost-free area that doesn't get too warm - they do need the cold.
  • Wrap the pot(s) in bubble wrap for extra protection.
  • If you line the inside of their pot(s) with bubble wrap before adding soil and planting your bulbs, your tulips will already have some protection.

Extra+

We still don't really have a fully black tulip but the 'Paul Scherer' tulip comes pretty close. Growers have managed, with a fair degree of difficultly, to create an almost black tulip. The colour is actually deep purple but from a distance, it looks pretty black. The 'Paul Scherer' tulip grows on tall, sturdy stems of the 'single, late' variety.
The 'Barbados' tulip has very pretty flowers on sturdy stems. The petals are all really very fringed and you'd think there was icing along the edges! These come in a lovely bright red. Of course these are classified under 'fringed' tulips. They will grow to a height of about 50 cm.
Plant this unique combination somewhere nice and prominent and they are sure to be remarked upon!
