You will receive an 60 cm long planter with 10 ever-bearing strawberry plants. Water the plants immediately after receiving them. Place the patio planter with the Fragaria x ananassa in a sunny spot. The strawberry is a perennial and grows well in humus rich, fertile soil. The soil should not be too dry, but also certainly not too wet in winter.

In spring, do not forget to make use of Bakker’s special fertiliser for strawberries (dissolved in water). Do not use too much nitrogen when fertilising, it will cause a watery taste. Do not forget to water the plants regularly. When picking for the first time, pick all the strawberries and remove all the flowers and any runners to encourage the production of new flowers and fruits. A few weeks after the last harvest, the leaves of the strawberry will wither and become unsightly. If that is the case, cut off everything and only leave a few young leaves in the heart of the plant. Also remove all runners. The plants can remain in the same planter for two years. Allow the plants to overwinter in a cool, frost-free place.

Harvesting strawberries

The strawberries will taste best if they are allowed to ripen on the plant - so pick them regularly from June to October. If you do not provide protection, the birds will do the harvesting for you. Therefore place a fine net or foil over your planter, if the birds bother you.

The strawberry is one of the most popular fruits, particularly amongst children. This delicious fruit is also called a summer fruit. Our ever-bearing strawberries produce very large fruits, deliciously juicy and full of flavour. After the first harvest, new flowers are formed on the strawberry plants. You can harvest strawberries into autumn. As strawberries do not have a long shelf life they are best eaten whilst fresh or any surplus can be used to make jam or ice cream. Strawberries are very healthy and contain, amongst other things, calcium, Phosphor, vitamin B and C.
