Planting
Plant the Pulmonaria in the garden or in a pot immediately upon receipt. Prepare a wide hole in the garden and loosen the soil with a fork. Improve poor garden soil with a mix of garden compost and some granulated cow manure. Place the root ball at the correct depth in the hole – the top of the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil, press firmly down and water generously. Or, plant the Pulmonaria in large planter(s). Pulmonaria thrives in shade or part shade in humus-rich moist soil (not waterlogged). Lunwort in the garden The Pulmonaria is a strong perennial that can grow in the same spot for many years. It is one of the most popular foliage plants, even in the shade they thrive well. You can use these plants as solitary plants or plant them between other low growing plants. The leaves combine wonderfully with the spotted dead nettle (Lamium maculatum) 'Beacon Silver' and lily grass (Liriope muscari) 'Moneymaker'. The spotted foliage combines beautifully with other shade loving plants such as astilbe, columbine, giant hosta and Japanese anemones.
Care
Pulmonaria sp. (lungwort) is an easy to grow and low-maintenance plant. Make sure that the soil does not dry out too much around the roots as soil that is too dry will not be tolerated. The plant is very hardy and remains green through most of the winter. In spring, cut back old leaves and soon there will be signs of new shoots. Pulmonaria is an early spring flowerer. As ground cover Pulmonaria is excellent ground cover in a shady garden. Also thrives under deciduous trees or large shrubs and suitable to allow to self-seed. They can be left to develop naturally and will multiply over the years.
Extra
Lungwort is known best for its foliage as it stays green almost the year through but it is also popular for its beautiful flowers. The bi-coloured flowers are on stems that protrude just above the leaf. Another advantage of Pulmonaria – slugs and snails rarely consider them tasty!
