The Eternal Flame

This little one also needs to sleep at night! During the day the Calathea cleans the air in the room, and at night it sleeps. The Crocata does this by pointing its leaves straight upwards in the evening. The Calathea crocata owes its nickname 'Eternal Flame' to the orange flowers protruding above the foliage. The plant grows all year round; the flowers bloom for 2 or 3 months a year. This jungle plant needs high humidity. Always keep the soil moist, without letting the plant stand in water. Spray the leaves at least once per week. This prevents the leaf edges from drying out. The Calathea likes moderate sunlight, so this plant should not be placed in full sun. This plant improves your air quality. The Calathea removes impurities from the air and converts them into oxygen. Not only decorative, but also healthy!

Planting
Supplied in a standard nursery pot. Place the pot as a whole in a decorative pot. Otherwise use a saucer under the pot. Water may be allowed to stay in the saucer as it evaporates or is absorbed. Water again only when saucer is empty. Choose a warm place for the Calathea crocata with no direct sunlight on the plant and preferably not below 15 degrees Celsius.
Care
The Calathea crocata is a genuine jungle plant and really does not like full sun! The Calathea crocata likes it to be kept humid so spray the leaves regularly with rainwater to keep them nice. If the air is too dry, the dried up leaf edges will let you know... This plant does not like to be fertilised too much. Half the dosage suggested on dry or liquid fertiliser packets.
Extra
Calatheas are members of the Maranta family (Marantaceae). Calatheas crocata is the representative of this family which is grown commercially for the flowers. The foliage is dark green with a purple underside which contrasts beautifully with the orange flowers.
