Strong plant

An Asian touch in the garden. This bamboo (Phyllostachys bissetii) is a strong plant from China. It can grow up to 5 to 8 metres high! The bamboo has narrow green glossy leaves. The young plant has grey-green stems that have can grow 4 to 5 cm thick. As it gets older, its colour changes to dark green.
The winter-hardy plants spread. So dig a root barrier around the plant to keep it in check. Cut away unwanted shoots that do emerge. Plant the Phyllostachys in a sheltered spot in partial shade or shade. Keep the ground moist, but not constantly. Water it regularly in a pot or planter.

Planting
Make sure the root system of Phyllostachys bissetii is sufficiently moist. First place the bamboo in a bucket of lukewarm water. Prepare a sufficiently large plant hole and loosen the soil properly. Place the root system of Phyllostachys bissetii at the correct depth in the plant hole. The top of the root system should be just below ground level. Fill the plant hole with soil and press down firmly. Water the plants immediately after planting. Phyllostachys bissetii will grow in any part of the garden, in normal, moderately moist garden soil. Bamboo in your garden Phyllostachys bissetii is a beautiful evergreen; ideal as a solitary plant for your garden. It would be a nice idea to prune away the lower leaves. In this way, the green twigs are clearly visible and you will be able to look through them. Phyllostachys bissetii is also suitable as a tall, separate hedge. Cut the hedge in the required shape at the start of summer. Stems that are protruding too far can be cut off regularly. Ideal for places that you want to fill in quickly, and excellent to prevent people from looking in!
Care
Phyllostachys bissetii is a strong bamboo, that hardly requires any care. Water extra in the first months after planting, in case of a very dry period. Very dry soil is not tolerated well. Branches that you prune above-ground will no longer bleed.
Extra
Phyllostachys bissetii is a beautiful tall bamboo with green branches. The leaves are quite small and have a sharp point. The sturdy stems are bright green. Do give this large bamboo sufficient space, in nutritious soil the stems can become more than 3 metres high. This strong and fast growing bamboo forms large clumps but rarely produces any suckers.
